The Power of The Sea-Wolf Essay -- Sea-Wolf Essays

The Power of The Sea-Wolf Jack London’s epic, The Sea-Wolf, has a wide range of translations. The story can be perused as a blend of the naturalistic novel and the nostalgic sentiment, both exceptionally well known when the new century rolled over. London likewise brings into play artistic naturalism, in which individuals are portrayed as simply one more animal groups in nature, subject to every last bit of Her infinite powers. The Sea-Wolf fits impeccably the original example of a commencement story. Profundity and intrigue are added to The Sea-Wolf by effectively coordinating these three components - the mix of two well known sorts, abstract naturalism, and the commencement story. One of the attributes basic to most naturalistic books is the subject of natural selection. This epic is particularly in concordance with this hypothesis, set up by Charles Darwin and his hypothesis of characteristic choice. Both Humphrey Van Weyden and Maud Brewster are people who have never known physical hardship. They are the two individuals of the books, and end up in a remote situation when abandoned on this pontoon with a customary demon (49), Wolf Larsen. Humphrey Van Weyden, in the wake of experiencing an inception process to be talked about later, gets himself unfit to recollect unmistakably whatever else. It appears just as I have carried on with this life consistently. The universe of books is unclear, more like a fantasy memory than a fact. I without a doubt have pursued and forayed and battled all a mind-blowing times ( 229). Humphrey makes a practically ideal implication to Darwin's natural selection thought when conversing with Wolf Larsen, You were once, and ready to eat, as you were satisfied to express it; however there has been a reducing, and I am currently ready to eat you (249). Indeed, even Maud ... ...driven Hump. Protuberance endures this purported trial and makes it to third phase of the inception procedure - the arrival to the gathering. With the start of this stage the start is changed. Mound becomes Mr. Van Weyden, as Wolf Larsen elevates him to initially mate to supplant Johansen. He is presently acknowledged as a feature of the gathering and he, not at all like Larsen, has great compatibility with all the group individuals. After this last stage is finished is the point at which he gets up the boldness to escape the Ghost and Larsen, and flee with Maud Brewster. The Sea-Wolf is one of the most extravagant, and generally fascinating, books at any point composed. Jack London has utilized an assortment of artistic methods to breath life into his story. Through the mix of two mainstream sorts of the time (naturalistic and sentiment), the utilization of the artistic naturalism, and the account of a commencement, London breathes life into the characters.

Khan Lab School Opening Day

Khan Lab School Opening Day Back in June we told you that we’d be experimenting with a learning lab, and today marks the opening of the Khan Lab School, which will be composed of a small cohort of around 30 students. Khan Academy has a history of summer camps and working with classrooms, which have both really helped us better understand opportunities to help teachers and students. In order to take an even more hands-on and sustained approach, the Khan Lab School will  research blended learning and education innovation by creating a working model of Khan Academy’s philosophy of learning in a physical school environment and sharing the learnings garnered with schools and networks around the world. Our goal is to develop new, personalized practices that center around the student. As this model is developed, we will be sharing and testing the practices in diverse settings to offer new ways of thinking about Khan Academy and the classroom. The lab school will focus on developing practices that empower students to realize that they can shape the systems and solve problems of the world through their own character, intellect, and passion. There are already thousands of classrooms across the world that are using Khan Academy. We learn so much from these classrooms and try to share those learnings with other schools and educators.  A small-scale lab school helps us further explore how physical environments can be reimagined and blended with online tools to empower teachers and students. The intent is not just to develop practices, but also to share them in ways most likely to effect broad change. We intend to further share with the world through in-house research fellowships, teacher workshops, videos, publications, and the broader Khan Academy platform. As this is a research lab school, it is not open for general enrollment at this time. But if you’d like to be on an email list to hear more about the lab school in the coming months, you can sign up here. - Jason Pittman, Head Teacher, on behalf of the Khan Lab School team

A Sociological Melting Pot Homogenizing Cultures

In sociology, the melting pot is a concept referring to a heterogeneous society becoming more homogeneous with the different elements â€Å"melting together† into a harmonious whole with a common culture. The melting pot concept is most commonly used to describe the assimilation of immigrants to the United States, though it can be used in any context where a new culture comes to co-exist with another. In recent times, refugees from the Middle East have created melting pots throughout Europe and the Americas. This term is often challenged, however, by those who assert that cultural differences within a society are valuable and should be preserved. An alternative metaphor, therefore, is salad bowl or mosaic, describing how different cultures mix, but still remain distinct. The Great American Melting Pot The United States of America was founded upon the concept of opportunity for every immigrant, and to this day this right to immigrate to the U.S. is defended in its highest courts. The term first originated in the U.S. around 1788 to describe the cultures of many European, Asian, and African nationalities merging together in the newfound culture of the new United States. This idea of melting cultures together lasted through much of the 19th and 20th centuries, culminating in the 1908 play The Melting Pot, which further perpetuated the American ideal of a homogenous society of many cultures.   However, as the world was overtaken in global warfare in the 1910s, 20s, and again in the 30s and 40s, Americans began to establish an anti-globalist approach to American values, and a large contingent of citizens started calling for banning immigrants from certain countries based on their cultures and religions. The Great American Mosaic Due perhaps to an overwhelming  sense of patriotism among older-generation Americans, the idea of preserving the American culture from foreign influence has taken center stage in recent elections in the United States. For this reason, progressives and civil rights activists arguing on behalf of allowing immigration of refugees and impoverished peoples have renamed the concept to be more of a mosaic, where the elements of different cultures sharing one new nation cohesively form a mural of all beliefs working side by side. As idealistic as this seems, it works in many instances. Sweden, for instance, has seen no change in crime despite allowing in a large swathe of Syrian refugees in 2016 and 2017. Instead, the refugees, respecting the culture of the land theyve been welcomed to, work side by side with their allies to build better communities.

Juvenile Justice Helping Or Hurting The Future...

Juvenile Justice: Helping or Hurting the Future Generations of America Jennifer B. Moye CRJU 2400 IA: Survey of Juvenile Justice Valdosta State University Abstract In the second half of the twentieth century, the United States faced a problem of enormous impact on society negatively affecting families, the economy, and the future of American children: the vast, and ever-increasing number of youths being processed through the juvenile justice court system. In the years since the turn of the century, through implementation of legislation sponsored by activists, lawyers, community organizers, educators and other reformers focusing mainly upon curbing youth incarceration, and instead promoting community and social alternatives, the most recent trends reflect a stemming and actual decline of youths entering the United States juvenile justice system. Most recently, leading the way in the effort to decrease the number of children processed through the courts is the State of Georgia, recent legislation of which has drastically reduced the number of juveniles incarcerated by an amazing rate. The Quiet Revolution The purpose of this paper is to analyze the aspects of The Quiet Revolution on Quebec, and how the changes implemented by Lesage made Quebec the province it is today. The Quiet Revolution was only quiet at name; it triggered many conflicts that appeared in Quebec. The province began to move away from Catholic Church with the help of nationalists, leaving Quebec reformed and quite different from how it was before the 1960’s. We will write a custom essay sample on The Quiet Revolution or any similar topic only for you Order Now Before the Quiet Revolution, Quebec was majorly formed of rural population. They believed that rural was much better than urban, but due to large families and the lack of good land, it pushed most Quebeckers to move to the cities. By 1921, half of Quebec’s population was urbanized. Manufacture industries of textile and shoes located in Quebec, were attracting many Quebeckers to work. The schools of Quebec were owned by the Catholic Church, and were mostly run by priests, nuns and brothers. The Quiet Revolution was a period between 1960 and 1966; it was mainly a period of political, social and economic change (Winston Knoll Collegiate). The Union Nationale party was in power since 1944, it held conservative outdated values. The election of June 1960 was the beginning of revolutionary changes that were about to happened in Quebec. The election of June 22nd 1960, when the Liberal Party of Quebec ran by Jean Lesage finally won 51. 5% against Union Nationale. â€Å"The main issue of the election was indicated by the Liberal slogan, â€Å"It’s time for a change†(The Canadian Encyclopedia, 2012)†. The government under Lesage began new era with open debates, changing the political electoral map so each urban area would be well represented. The government changed the voting age from 21 to 18. Lesage by increasing loans, made the budget grow from $745 million to $2. 1 billion in less than six years. The Baby Boom generation that had reached adolescence put a lot of pressure on Quebec’s poor educational system; the role of Catholic Church was quite criticized and abolished pushing the government into creating a department of education, the Parent Report created a school system available to the entire population. One of the major accomplishments by the government in the economic sector was the nationalization of private electricity companies, an idea that was introduced by Rene Levesque, a minister of natural resources. The government of Jean Lesage encouraged industrialization, promoting investments and guaranteeing economic benefits through the buy-Quebec policy, all these objectives were met when Hydro-Quebec became the symbol of success and economic resources. The creation of â€Å"caisse de depot et placement du Quebec† triggered the creation of the Quebec pension plan, which immediately grew to billion dollars. Quebec’s favorite slogan that had huge improvements was the â€Å"maitres chez nous† (masters in our own house) which promoted and influenced federal-provincial relations. The demands that were imposed by Lesage were largely met. â€Å"Lesage forced the federal government to accept Quebec’s withdrawal from several cost-sharing programs and to compensate Quebec fiscally (The Canadian Encyclopedia, 2012)†. Therefore Quebec was the only province that had the right to withdraw. Thus, the conflicts then rose between the English Canadians and the French Canadian. The federal Pearson Liberal government established the Royal Commission on bilingualism and biculturalism, which warned that Canada was passing through the greatest crisis in its history (The Quiet Revolution Changed Quebec Forver). Pearson liberal party to gain more strength and credibility hired three wise men; Jean Marchand, Gerard Pelletier and Pierre Eliott Trudeau. Quebec was gaining power and the se changes made many different French Canadian nationalists for example; FLQ (Front de liberation du Quebec) believed that Quebec is a distinct society and worship separatism, which resulted in terrorism. In 1966, when Quebec faced elections they were confident of triumph, but the Union National had add changes to its image attracted more conservative voters and since the Quiet Revolution never really influenced the rural areas. On June 5th of 1966 the Union National won the elections against the Liberals. Although, the liberal party was elected in 1960 and defeated in 1966, Jean Lesage in 6 years of power had accomplished forceful changes; the French language took more place and importance in Canada, the welfare state; including the pension plan, Medicare and Hydro Quebec. The Quiet Revolution was an important point of reference in Quebec’s history; all governments elected in Quebec never omit to mention the importance and the positive consequences that it brought to Quebec. Financial Management In Profit Organization-Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: Discuss About The Financial Management In Profit Organization? Answer: Introduction The study aims to identify and evaluate the key differences of financial management between a profit and a not-for-profit organization, where the two different organizations are selected to support the understanding of the need of financial management in not-for-profit organization (Bryce, 2017). Demonstrating key differences of financial management There are several differences between a profit and not-for- profit organisation. While the aim of the profit organisation is to generate income by selling goods and providing services. Their nature of business is to earn profit. On the flipside, not-for-profit organizations are more service oriented, where they raise funds by the way of donations, for instances, public hospitals and trusts are not directly involved in earning revenue (Arvidson and Lyon, 2014, p.875). On the financial aspect, profit motive organizations need to maintain financial statements according to the rules of AASB and IASB. However, only income and expenditure account, receipt and payment account along with classified balance sheet are required to be prepared in not-for-profit organizations. Profit organisation is managed either by sole proprietor partner or by directors whereas the not-for-profit organisation is managed by either committee, trustees or by governing bodies. Money earned beyond by the profit organisation is delivered to the capital account, on the other hand, the surplus of revenue over expenditure which results in the excess is delivered to the capital fund. Profit organisation pay taxes for the profit that they made but not-for-profit do not distribute profit individuals they may be tax exempt. When a profit organisation goes out of business they can liquidate their assets and give money to the shareholder whereas if a not-for-profit goes out of business its assets must be donated to other not-for-profit organization that has a similar mission. Profit organisation are generally based to generate revenue for business people and their employee but not-for-profit are generally based to serve a humane and environmental need. Understanding the differences between Wesfarmers Limited and Community Housing Council of South Australia Wesfarmers Limited being an ASX listed profit earning organization must prepare financial statements with respect to the guidelines and accounting frameworks laid by AASB and IASB. It can be seen from the yearly reports of Wesfarmers, that the gathering working sections are sorted out and overseen exclusively by the character of the items. Intrigue pay and cost are not dispensed to working part, since these sorts of exercises are taken care of on the gathering premise. The disorganized objects provide information about the thing that are not perceived in the monetary proclamation but rather could significantly affect the Group's budgetary position and execution. However, other objects give information on things which require revelations to concur with AASB and other overseeing articulation. All things considered, these are not viewed as crucial in understanding the money related introduction or position of the gathering (www.wesfarmers.com.au, 2017). On the counterpart, Community Housing Council of South Australias financial statement is different, where only income and expenditure is prepared (chcsa.org.au, 2017). However, this organization also prepares comprehensive income statement including the receipt of donation and funds in the form of revenue. Interest income is named intrigue expands while utilizing the compelling interest technique. This is a technique for ascertaining the recovered cost of a monetary resources and disseminating the premium income over the appropriate time-span by utilizing the effective interest rates on various loans and advances, which is the rate that precisely deducts to figure future money voucher to the normal existence of the budgetary advantage for the net conveying total of the financial resources. Exchange and others payable sum speaks to liabilities for merchandise and ventures gave to the joined affiliation and before to the finish of the money related year and which is unpaid. Due to thei r transient nature, they are figured at the stifled cost and it is not reduced. Critical evaluation of the differences According to Zeff. et al (2014, p.240) the financial management system of profit motive organizations like Wesfarmers Limited, are completely based on the accounting guidelines, which are helpful for the stakeholders to read and understand the financial perspective of the company and take valuable decision. On the other hand, Lvanov and Avasilc?i (2014, p.1192), have also supported the fact, but made contradict judgment in case of not-for-profit organization, where Newberry (2014, p.295), explained that these kinds of organizations do not require to maintain such format for preparing annual report since they do not depend on the public stock. In addition, Finkler. et al (2016) cited that contributors to not-for-profit organization also receives benefit because their contributions are tax deductible. They also clarified that some of the not-for-profit organisation are forced to discontinue their service to the community in need when not-for-profit itself lacks. For profit organisation if the business goes down the final advantage of the company is that their assets are highly liquid and the owner can sell the company's assets so that they can arrange liability or for personal profit. However, Skelcher and Smith (2015, p.440) supported for not-for-profit organisation and said that many employees that work under not-for-profit organisation have an individual interest and conditions to the organisations cause. While not supporting the scenario Arvidson and Lyon (2014, p.870) explained that potential rebound and social fight harass some not-for-profit organisation whose duty are considered intense, either they are based on fun damentalist beliefs or radical attitude. While not supporting the condition Newberry (2014, p290) clarified that the employee of the not-for-profit organisation inherit intrinsic reward from the satisfaction of helping clients and community member who are not in the position to defend for themselves. This organisation receive salary by requesting donations from the community or they also sale their item to raise money for the cause. Conclusion From the above case, we can see that the profit organisation is to generate income by selling goods and providing services. Their nature of business is to earn profit. On the other-hand, not-for-profit organizations are more service oriented, where they raise funds by the way of donations, for instances, public hospitals and trusts are not directly involved in earning income. College Papers Headings - How to Design Them

College Papers Headings - How to Design ThemCollege papers, like any other type of documents, must be written in a certain way. You need to have the proper heading, fonts, formatting and spacing. If your heading doesn't flow properly it could lead to a certain type of disaster. The heading that you should use is the first thing that people will see. It should not be something that has been overused by your competition. It should be something that is unique to your company. It should give them a hint about what kind of business you are.The heading should show who your company is and what it stands for. The heading should help create a feeling of confidence and trust. The heading should be something that makes the reader want to click through and read the rest of the paper. Your title must draw them in so they will take the time to read the rest of the paper.Fonts and Spelling: The heading should be no smaller than two lines. Ideally it should be one line. This makes it easy to read and it doesn't take up a lot of space. However, if you want it to be a little bigger, go ahead. Make sure you use the same font as your heading.Any common spelling errors are not acceptable. This includes misspelled words and capitalized words. You can also use unbalanced word placement in your heading. Place your lettering in the right place. The spacing between words is the most important aspect of your page layout. You need to make sure that you leave enough space between words and between paragraphs. For instance, you would not want to make the first paragraph too long because it would lead to a loss of focus on the main points of the paper. There are so many other things that you should consider when designing a heading. Some people make the mistake of placing a heading over an article and then trying to place multiple paragraphs after that.A final point to remember is that it shouldn't take the reader out of the article. Remember that every article or page needs to flow. You don't want to have a bad impression of your company. Keep it professional, but don't make it seem like you are trying to impress your readers. The right headline and the proper heading will put your business at the top of the list. You can't go wrong with getting a professional to do the work for you and create the perfect college papers heading. They will understand exactly what you want and can tailor the heading accordingly. In the end, your headings will speak for you and your business.

Essay Topics - Three Tips to Make Them Yourself

Essay Topics - Three Tips to Make Them YourselfEssay topics are quite a bit different than one may think. However, the simple fact that you take an essay topic and turn it into a great essay topic will most likely be a deciding factor in whether or not you get a good grade on your essay. In other words, how do you decide which essay topics to go with? The first thing to look at is if the topic has a single interesting topic associated with it. This is obviously going to be the easiest to think of a title for and you may have a relatively good idea of how this topic will be broken down into essays. In a case like this, one or two elements are more important than a really catchy title. There are many other relevant essay topics out there, such as student leaders. Your chances of getting a good grade will be greatly increased by thinking about these first. If you do not have much in the way of specific ideas that can be written about, I would recommend looking into popular topics such as these. Then, you may consider taking on a good research subject. This would include topics such as anatomy or physics or something like that. If you think you can make a good argument for a certain topic, but are not sure what the thesis is going to be, then this would be a great topic to go with. You would most likely find that there are many people willing to discuss this topic with you, but as always the key is to be able to formulate a good thesis.Another common essay topics that people forget about is history. People rarely talk about history as a topic, but it is a very good one. Just make sure that you can think of an interesting thesis or topic surrounding the history of some kind. For example, do you want to write about why the Egyptians became so good at science when they never had any idea of it?A third topic that people should definitely consider is religion. Religion is a great subject to go into, and as you can imagine there are plenty of interesting topics that people would be interested in. However, make sure that you really know a lot about this topic, or at least have a good idea of what the basic positions are for a variety of religions. With all of the essay topics out there, you need to be careful about selecting them. Not only do you want to think about how good the topic is, but you also want to pick topics that the professor would be most interested in. You don't want to spend a lot of time writing a good topic, but get a grade.Of course, there are still personal essay topics you can choose from. Consider things like poetry paper, or a report on how your family has evolved over the years. This is another great place to start and gives you a very good starting point for a great essay.

Cherry orchard vs. endgame essays

Cherry orchard vs. endgame essays Three men: a Greek philosopher, a Russian playwright, and an Irish man who speaks English but writes in French (kind of absurd isnt it?) are standing in line at a vending machine. The Greek philosopher, upon realizing that he doesnt have any quarters, turns to the others in line and asks, Can either of you change a five? The Russian playwright and the native Irishman, who now lives in Paris where he writes in French and then painstakingly translates his works into English by himself (what is this guys deal?), look at each other pensively for a moment and then say, No. Get it? In both Anton Chekhovs The Cherry Orchard and Samuel Becketts Endgame there is a complete lack of change in any of the characters lives. Under normal circumstances this lack of one of the most important elements of theatre would result in two plays that are utterly worthless and simply not deserving of the effort that one would expend while reading them. However, these are not normal circumstances, and these are certainly not your everyday, average playwrights. In both plays, the absence of any change is a deliberate choice that each author has made. In The Cherry Orchard the characters simply refuse to accept that the world around them is changing, and therefore never undergo any changes themselves while in Endgame Beckett uses numerous ambiguous elements to simply prevent any change from being achievable. Chekhovs manifests the absence of change in The Cherry Orchard through the characters simple refusal to change. The dialogue in the beginning of the play informs the reader that the Cherry Orchard and the estate must be sold because of Lyubov Andreevna Ranevskayas and the rest of the familys inability to pay their debts. From this simple circumstance the reader can infer that Ranevskaya was once wealthy but no longer is. This leads to another important factor of the p...

Three Words Improvisations

Three Words Improvisations Student actors love improvs. This one generates a lot of original thinking in a short amount of time. If you focus the thinking of student actors on three words or phrases chosen at random to guide their creation of an improvised scene, you will free them to think far more creatively than if you told them to create a scene about anything at all. Although it sounds counter-intuitive, setting limits actually frees up creativity. This exercise gives student practice in quick collaboration, decision-making, and improvising based on a small amount of pre-planning. Detailed Instructions for facilitating this Improvisation 1. Prepare a number of words on individual slips of paper. You may prepare your own, or visit this page for lists  of words that you can download,  photocopy, cut, and use with your students. 2. Place the slips of paper containing the words into a hat, which, of course may actually be a box or a bowl or any other kind of bin. 3. Tell student actors that they will work in groups of two or three people. Each group will pick three words at random and meet together to quickly decide on the characters and context of a scene that will somehow employ their three chosen words. The individual words may be spoken within the dialogue of their improv or may merely be suggested by the setting or the action. For example, a group that gets the word villain may create a scene that features a character who is a villain without actually ever including that word in their dialogue. A group that gets the word laboratory may set their scene in a science lab, but never use the word in their scene. 4. Tell students that their goal is to plan and then present a short scene that has a beginning, middle, and an end. Every member of the group must play a role in the improvised scene. 5. Remind students that some kind of conflict within a scene generally makes it more interesting to watch. Recommend that they think about a problem that the three words suggest and then plan how their characters might work to solve the problem. Whether or not the characters succeed is what keeps audiences watching. 6. Divide students into groups of two or three and let them choose three words at random. 7. Give them approximately five minutes to plan their improvisation. 8. Gather the whole group together and present each improvised scene. 9. You may choose to have each group share their words before their improvisation or you may wait until after the improv and ask the audience to guess the groups words. 10. After each presentation, ask the audience to compliment the strong aspects of the improvisation. What worked? What effective choices did the student actors make? Who demonstrated a strong use of body, voice, or concentration in the performance of the scene? 11. Then ask the student actors to critique their own work. What went well? What would you change if you were to present the improv again? What aspects of your acting tools (body, voice, Imagination) or skills (concentration, cooperation, commitment, energy) do you feel that you need to work on and improve? 12. Ask the whole groupactors and audienceto share ideas for ways to improve the improvised scene. 13. If you have the time, its great to send the same groups of student actors back to rehearse the same improvised scene and incorporate the recommendations that they agree with. Additional Resources If you havent already, you may want to review the  article  Classroom Improvisation Guildelines and share it with your students. Geotechnical Properties & Construction Methods Coursework

Geotechnical Properties & Construction Methods - Coursework Example At this stage, Engineer will be collecting data from Geological survey, topographic maps, photogeology (aerial) , digital data, borehole records, national survey, mining records in order to understand the geology, compressive soils, drift thickness, landslides, soluble rocks, made ground, etc.†¦ The main importance of the desk study is to understand the geological condition of the site in order to analyse its implication during any stage of the planned engineering activity. This means that for a difficult ground condition, either the foundation design has to be adequate or a reduction of the actual superstructure loads has to be considered. In the given site, the points below can be listed as evidence of desk study as an element of site investigation: Borehole data: the presence of made ground and building debris with patches of old oil spillages; this has been found at a thickness of 1m above the ground level. Soft silt up to a depth of 10m then compacted sand and gravel at 18m . This is the exact composition of the soil beneath and will allow for adequate selection of foundation design. Knowing that up to a depth of1m below the ground level, the soil has almost no strength. This layer will have no importance in the overall bearing capacity of the soil. The Borehole data will enable Engineers to be aware of possible soil contamination of the top soil, weak soil up to a depth of 10m and that strong strata can be seen only after 18m below the ground level. One can argue that Strip foundation; defined as shallow foundation (Maheshwari, 2009) will never be ideal for this type of soil. Topographic map. For the considered site, a topographic map has been obtained. This gives the large-scale detail as well as the relief of the site. It consists of measuring the ground level with respect to a benchmark (Mellow, 2010). On map has shown latitude, which is the level of a given point on site with respect to the ground level. For the fact that two points of the same si te are not always at the same level with respect to the sea level, while a building requires a level terrain, topographic map will be important to give the ground profile, and enable engineers to quantity earthwork; this is the volume of cutting and filling in order to level the site before construction begins. Ground water table: as an element of the site investigation, the desk study will give enable to locate the ground water. For the proposed site, this is 1.5m below the ground level. McLean and Rible (1985) explained that the water table is a very important factor influencing the overall strength of the soil. In an undrained condition, where the water pressure has been taken into account, the total strength of the soil is much higher than the drained condition, without water; keeping in mind that the latter will give the actual strength parameters of the soil. Overestimating the strength of the soil can lead to structural failure as the foundation will not be under-designed the refore will not be able to support the imposed load from the superstructure. Also, as the required construction has taken into account a basement, deep excavation will be required. Knowing the ground water level, will be very important for the fact that, if it is above the required depth of excavation, flooding will occur and the exaction, representing the working environment will be against the health and safety. It can be seen that the desk study wi

Analysis of Bullying in Schools Literature review

Analysis of Bullying in Schools - Literature review Example Bullying has been in existence for decades, and some countries like Australia and England have had bullying problems for centuries. It is only since the 1980s when "three middle school boys" from Norway "committed suicide" (Green, 2007, para.2) as a consequence of repeated bullying. Because of this reason, attention has been placed on the issues of bullying. There has been a great increase in the younger children committing suicide because of bullying which makes these younger people go on violent rampages, it is hardly surprising that public concern with student safety has also led to an increased awareness of the consequences of bullying. Recent research has focused on both bullies and victims in a number of terms but this literature review will focus on research in relation to gender and age, and the accounting for victims and bullies. The research will be focusing on gender as a factor of bullying seeing is there is any difference in the way the girls or the boys are involved in bullying. Age as a factor will be considered and the psychological angles of bullying will be covered. In the research literature, there have been a number of definitions  Ã‚   " Olweus claimed there were two sorts of bullying - direct, wherein the victim is subjected to physical abuse, and indirect, wherein the victim suffers psychological or emotional mistreatment (as cited in Green, 2007, para.1) Gray has defined bullying as repeated damaging actions that were perhaps linked with negative intent (as cited in Attwood, 2004, What is bullying section, para.1). Gender Issues Seals and Young, (2003) carried out a study on the occurrence and relationship of bullying to gender, age, ethnicity, self-esteem and depression, experienced by seventh and eighth-grade students in the northern delta region of the US. The study has shown that there were considerably more male than female bullies, with "twice as many males identified as females identified as bullies" (Discussion section, para.2). Delfabbro et al. (2006) carried out a study on bullying by peers and teachers in secondary schools in South Australia. The results have truly reflected the fact that the boys are "more likely to be the perpetrators of bullying" (Delfabbro et al. 2006, p.72).

The Case for Introducing a Property Tax, Collected at Local Government

I propose that an annual residential property tax be introduced and collected at central government for an introductory period with a view to control being handed over to local government and the revenues generated by the tax to be used solely for local publicly provided goods. But for this to be an efficient and effective method of funding local authorities and not adversely affect the balances of the exchequer there needs to be an overhaul as to how local authorities are currently funded and run. Introducing a property tax will hopefully broaden the tax base and go some way to overhauling how the tax system works in Ireland and how local authorities are funded. Rationale for a residential property tax in Ireland Stability There are many reasons in support of a residential property tax. Firstly, it will provide a stable and less volatile income for the exchequer, as is the case with a transaction such as stamp duty, and generally improve macroeconomic stability. The tax income collected by stamp duty made a huge contribution to the exchequer, but as we can see from Fig 1.1, it tended to fluctuate, making it more difficult to budget long-term and susceptible to market forces, as is the case currently. A â€Å"recurring annual tax is less economically distortionary than the imposition of tax on either income or capital† (TSG 09/07) and a more reliable and stable tax income achieved from a proposed residential property tax would help with investment planning, as an â€Å"over-reliance on expenditure and transaction taxes has resulted in tax revenue dropping more quickly than (nominal) GNP† (Commission on Taxation Report 6:2.2). As we can see from the data contained in the ‘Commission o n Taxation Report 2009’ (Fig 1.1), revenues from sta... ...t such scenarios and ensure the equitable nature of the tax is maintained and â€Å"serious administration and avoidance problems arise when rates differ between jurisdictions† (McDowell 1988). Corporate Culture and Its Influence on the Development

â€Å"CORPORATE CULTURE AND ITS INFLUENCES ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF MANAGEMENT CONSULTANCY AND BUSINESS SOLUTION JOINT STOCK COMPANY† INTRODUCTION ************ 1. Rationale of the study The term â€Å"Corporate culture† has appeared in the world and become a hot topic of many researches since the late 20th century. When the business environment faces a number of unpredictable changes and challenges resulting from integrity process and economic crisis, enterprises from any size and any country must recognize the important role of corporate culture to their survival. However, corporate culture is truly concerned only in big groups and corporations and some medium-size companies. In Vietnam, the number of enterprises that have a proper strategy to develop their own culture is nearly insignificant. It is the fact that each company has its own culture may be without recognizing and controlling it. In the simplest way we can understand corporate culture as the environment within a company in which all staff and workers communicate and work together.Hence, if we pay a certain attention, we can easily see that corporate culture has a strong affect on the cooperation between all employees, the productivity in particular and the development of the company in general. Moreover, in consulting companies, the reputation plays a key role in the company development for it influences the number of customers trusting in and using their consulting service. However, the reputation of a company is contributed from the professionalism that is reflected through the working environment or, in other word, the corporate culture of the company. Therefore, it is necessary to study corporate culture and its influences in real consulting companies in Vietnam like Management consultancy and business solution Joint stock Company. In conclusion, such researches about corporate culture like the one being conducting in this study somehow will be highly appreciated by businesses. Especia lly in 2013, the economic outlook is considered to be worse than that in 2012. That is the reason why each company has to find out a developing strategy which can make them outstanding from others. Therefore I would like to choose â€Å"Corporate culture and its influences on the development of Management consultancy and business solution Joint stock Company† as my thesis in this study for its huge value and meaning to our economy. 2. Aims of the study The primary aim of this research is to study about the corporate culture of MC&BS JSC and its impacts on the development of the company. Then the author will give some recommendations with the hope that they can help MC&BS JSC find out their comprehensive strategy for further development. 3. Scope of the studyBecause of the limitation of time, this research will not cover all components of the corporate culture. It will just analyze some important and prominent factors which have significant effects (both positive and negative) on the development of MC&BS JSC. More importantly, the research does not look at the corporate culture of MC&BS JSC from the foundation up to now but in the two recent years (in 2011 and in 2012) for the reason that when the economic shows a sign of downturn corporate culture becomes more and more meaningful to the lifespan of its owner. 4. MethodologyData analysis is the most frequently applied method in the study. Besides, the author also conducts surveys by using questionnaires in order to get more information. In concrete, in the first stage lasting two weeks, the researcher collects data from various sources: media, employees and internal files†¦Then, the researcher carries out some surveys to have more specific and precise information in two later weeks. Lastly, in the four following weeks, data analysis method will be adopted to produce final conclusions. 5. Organization of the study The study is divided into three parts:The first part is the introduction dealing with th e rationale, aims, scope, method, organization and significance of the study. The second part is the main part with three chapters: * Chapter 1 is the literature review which provides readers a general review of what corporate culture is, its components, and how it affects the company development. * Chapter 2 refers to the research methodologies. This means that it will describes in detail sources of data, methods applied in the research and their progresses as well as their outputs. * Chapter 3 is the main part of the study which consists of some discussions. This chapter will point out strengths and weaknesses of the current corporate culture in MC&BS JSC. Then, the author will suggest some actions that could be done in MC&BS JSC in order for them to develop a proper corporate culture. The last part is the conclusion that summarizes the content of the paper and gives some suggestions for further study. 6. Significance It is hoped that this research will be a helpful reference paper for the management of MC&BS JSC in specific and for businesses in general to build up their most appropriate corporate culture.
